On the water!
With such great access to the water, it is inevitable that sailing and other watersports, such as kite-surfing and jet ski-ing are in abundance. From the beginner to the round-the-world yachtsmen and women, there are clubs, courses, charters and races to meet every need.
The unspoilt beaches of Stokes Bay and Lee-on-the Solent offer breath-taking views and hours of pleasure soaking up the sun, swimming or walking for miles along the tranquil waters of the coastline, stretching from Gilkicker to Hillhead.
On dry land!
If you want to stay dry, there is fishing, leisurely harbour tours and river cruises, not to mention a whole host of land-based sports and activities. Two golf courses, ice-skating, tennis, squash, bowls, gyms and well-reputed football and rugby clubs are just a few of the choices available locally. Cycling is another popular past time, with the flat terrain and network of cycleways making it a healthy and fun option for families and commuters alike.
Alternatively, there are the 190 hectares of the Alver Valley, already providing a green haven for walkers, bird-watchers and naturalists. With plans to open up the area further as a Country Park now underway, the opportunities to enjoy this space are set to grow.
Local visitor attractions
There are a number of local attractions for visitors and residents alike, and more information on these can be found on the tourism website. Gosport is also well located for easy access to the Isle of Wight and nearby cathedral towns of Chichester and Winchester. The New Forest and South Downs are close by, with the major retail developments at West Quay, Southampton and the planned Northern Quarter in Portsmouth offering retail therapy for committed shoppers
