Gosport is located on the south coast of England and covers an area of approximately 11 square miles that fronts Portsmouth Harbour (to the east) and sits adjacent to the waters of the Solent (to the west).
Mid-2007 population estimates put the Borough’s total population at 79,200, of which 48,600 are of working age.
There are 27 primary and 3 secondary schools in the Borough. One secondary school has a sixth form and there is also a sixth form College located close to the Town Centre. All secondary schools have specialist status, which include: Sports; Performing Arts; and Maths and Computing.
The employment rate at the year-end to June 2008 was 81.1%, although the impact of the recession and rising unemployment (3.2% as at March 2009), will have caused this to fall slightly.
Approximately 40.5% of those in employment are in Professional or Senior Managerial occupations. A further 43% work in skilled trades, administration, sales and customer or personal service.
There are over 2,000 businesses in the Borough, of which approximately 1,500 are VAT registered. The majority of firms are small and medium-sized enterprises, although there are a number of major employers particularly in the public and manufacturing sectors.
Manufacturing accounts for approximately 26% of all employment, including 18% in advanced manufacturing. The public sector provides employment for an estimated 23% of local workers.
There are approximately 32,000 households in Gosport. The average price of a semi-detached house for the quarter to September 2008 was £166,859; which compares extremely well against the Hampshire average and makes the Borough one of the most affordable, as well as attractive, places to live in the County.
