Gosport
Gosport is in south Hampshire and has just under 80,000 residents (including Lee-on-the-Solent). In the summer months the population increases 5-10,000 by visitors who are attracted to this lovely part of Hampshire's coast. Overlooking the Solent, Gosport lies on a peninsula opposite the city of Portsmouth which is a short ferry ride away.
Gosport has always been closely linked to Portsmouth and it's naval and military centre. Many of its fortifications and installations, such as Fort Blockhouse and Palmerston Forts have been opened to the public as tourism and heritage sites. There has also been extensive redevelopment of the harbour area as a marina, with Stokes Bay and the Solent popular areas for yachting. Other tourism sites in Gosport include the Royal Navy Submarine Museum, the Explosion! exhibition and the Gosport Museum.
Gosport started life as a village at the eastern end of the peninsular opposite Portsmouth. Today it is an eclectic area with many business sectors with light manufacturing, marine and retail being the most prominent. The Gosport peninsula has 17 miles (27km) of waterfront and the Gosport area is a popular tourist destination.
The beach at Stokes Bay provides fine views of shipping entering and leaving Portsmouth and Southampton harbours as well as views of the Isle of Wight a few miles across the Solent.
