Gosport Business Rates

Development BuildingThe Council is responsible for collecting the business rates in the Gosport area. Otherwise known as 'non-domestic rates', business rates are the means by which businesses and other occupiers of non-domestic property indirectly contribute to the cost of local authority services.

The amount payable by each business depends on the Rateable Value of their premises and a number of other factors, including exemptions and reliefs.

You can check the current rateable value for any existing commercial premises, by carrying out a post code search on the Valuation Office Agency's website. Click here to go to their website pages.

If you work from home; are responsible for vacant premises; or are looking to operate from premises that are still under construction; you should also seek advice about paying business rates and/or obtaining an estimate of the likely rateable value.

Rate relief is also available to small businesses that meet the necessary criteria. For further information on this, go to our "Surviving the recession" section.

For advice or queries on any aspect of business rates, contact the Council's Business Rates team on 023 9254 5327 or e-mail businessrates@gosport.gov.uk
