Have your say on the future of Gosport's waterfront!

09/09/2009

Council leaders have recently outlined their proposal to redevelop the waterfront area close to the Town Centre. The redevelopment will include the area close to Gosport High Street, the bus station, Mumby Road, Coldharbour and a vacant piece of land at Royal Clarence Yard.

It is hoped that the redevelopment will include hotels, conference suites, performance halls, shops and houses and would complement Gunwharf Quays across the Harbour.

Council officers have been given the green light to draw up a masterplan and the public are being invited to submit ideas.

Tory council leader Mark Hook said: “Gosport waterfront is a prime piece of land. We want to turn it into a tourist attraction that people see and think "I must visit there".  It's got to be a good mix of retail, recreation, hotels, conference facilities and a small element of housing. Facilities should be top of the range, and we should have visionary landmark buildings. This regeneration could not only create thousands of jobs but could put Gosport back on the map. It's tremendously exciting.”

Cllr Hook says the project is currently a 'blank canvas' and he is keen for the public to get involved. 'It's the public's waterfront and I want to take the public with us at every stage. I welcome people's ideas.'

The masterplan will cost £150,000. The Partnership of Urban South Hampshire, made up of council leaders, is contributing £76,000, while two unnamed key local landowners will give £50,000. The council will cover the rest of the money.

Officers will now work with consultants to draw up a masterplan for the waterfront regeneration. However, the council is also inviting the public to send in ideas and says they will all be considered.

If there is something you would particularly like to see on the waterfront, write to the council leader, Councillor Mark Hook, at Gosport Borough Council, Town Hall, High Street, Gosport, PO12 1EB.
