Waterfront consultation - huge success

29/03/2010

A major study aimed at developing a Masterplan vision for the Gosport Waterfront has been launched, following the appointment by Gosport Borough Council, of Consultants Colin Buchanan & Partners.

With funding for the study coming from the Partnership for Urban South Hampshire (PUSH), the Council hopes to involve as many residents, businesses and visitors as possible, to develop a vision for the area, which stretches from the historic Royal Clarence Yard at one end, to Haslar Marina at the other, and includes the High Street shopping area.  This ambitious plan is aimed at creating a new vibrant and dynamic waterfront to ‘complement’ rather than ‘rival’ developments across the water at Gunwharf.

A public consultation took place between 8 and 12 March (pictured above) at the Discovery Centre and hundreds of local residents, businesses and stakeholder groups took the opportunity to view the display and discuss the opportunities for the waterfront with council officers and representatives from Colin Buchanan.

Speaking about what this means to the Borough, Cllr Mark Hook, Leader of Gosport Council said, “The area currently under discussion is probably one of the most visited parts of the town by both residents and visitors alike, so whatever we do on the Waterfront, it’s vital that we get it right, which is why the public’s views are so important.

The fact that so many people turned have up already to put forward suggestions means that it is as important to the people of Gosport as it is to us and, we hope that at the end of the exhibition we will be moving forward on something we can all be proud of.”

The Masterplan will be published in June.  For further information on the Gosport waterfront, visit www.gosport.gov.uk
