Future of Bus Rapid Transit system secure

20/11/2009

On 17 November 2009 at Cardiff Crown Court, following a hearing on 14 and 15 October, the Judge dismissed the application for a judicial review of the decision made by Hampshire County Council to grant planning permission for the proposed BRT Phase 1 route, Fareham to Gosport.

Councillor Mel Kendal, Executive Member for Environment at Hampshire County Council and Chairman of Transport for South Hampshire, said:  “Hampshire County Council welcomes the decision of the court today which vindicates the approach the Council has taken in considering the effects of the development of this dedicated busway may have on local wildlife, the environment in general, and the action of the County Council in putting into place appropriate mitigation strategies in accordance with the requirements of the appropriate statutory agencies.

The Judicial Review has focused on the County Council’s planning processes and again these have been vindicated.

We will now be able to press ahead with the busway and hope to complete it by March 2011.  This scheme will bring much needed social, economic and environmental benefits to the local community.”
